Q. Does the Smith School of Business and/or the University of Maryland,
College Park offer minors?
A. The Smith School of Business does not offer any minors. However,
the Smith School of Business does offer several special programs.

Online Courses
Q. Does the Smith School or the University of Maryland, College Park offer
online courses/degrees?
A. Currently, the Smith School of Business does not deliver courses
online. While courses may have components that are online, instruction is
primarily delivered in a classroom setting. For a list of online programs

Registration
1. Can a non-business major
register for business courses at the University of Maryland, College Park?
A: Most sections of lower level (100 & 200 level) business (BMGT)
courses are open to all students. The following lower level courses are
restricted to specific student populations as noted in the
Schedule of Classes:
BMGT190H, BMGT201, and selected sections of BMGT110, BMGT220, BMGT230 and
BMGT231.
In the fall and spring semesters, most upper level BMGT courses will be
restricted initially to BMGT students. Non-BMGT majors have the opportunity to
initially go on the holdfile for many upper level BMGT
courses. On the first or second day of classes, restrictions on the holdfile
courses are lifted. If there are seats available at that time, the students on
the holdfile fill in the open seats. If there is a waitlist,
the holdfile students join the back of the waitlist. During the Summer and
Winter sessions, most BMGT courses are not restricted and are open to all
students.

2. If I am waitlisted--or on a holdfile--for
a course which is full, do I get enrolled automatically if a space opens up?
A: No. While waitlists and holdfiles are a wonderful tool for students
to enroll in classes which are heavily demanded, they require careful monitoring
on the student's part to make sure you do not make a mistake with your
registration. Correct registration is your responsibility! Here's how it works.
Waitlist: A waitlist is a registration computer
file that compiles names of students who meet the restrictions of a closed
course section. If you place your name on a waitlist at the time of
registration, your place "in line" is preserved. You must
check-in daily using
the Web, or in person
during the schedule adjustment period in order to remain on the waitlist. (Click here for more details

Holdfile: A holdfile contains the names of
students who wish to take a restricted course for which you are not
eligible--i.e. a course outside of BMGT, for business majors, a BMGT course for
non-business majors. (Note: BMGT majors in one field--e.g. marketing-- will be
considered non-majors for another BMGT field--e.g. finance-- and would go on the
holdfile rather than the waitlist, if the course is restricted by major.)
Students on the holdfile must check-in on the first day of classes, and then
daily, to remain on the holdfile. Students may check on their holdfile progress
by going to Waitlist Check-In.
On the first or second day of classes, holdfiles are converted to waitlists,
allowing all open sections to be filled by students on the holdfile. If there is
a waitlist, the holdfile students join the back of the waitlist after the
restrictions are lifted.
You should avoid getting on a holdfile or waitlist for sections that conflict
with other courses you need or are currently registered for. You should also
take time during the schedule adjustment period to "clean up" your schedule,
deleting any courses which you do not want and making sure that you have
confirmed those that you do want. Again, mistakes in registration are your
responsibility, and exceptions to the drop/add deadline will not be made for
your errors.

3. If my classes are dropped by the Bursar's
Office, will I be able to register in the same courses later on, once I have
paid my bill and cleared the hold?
A: Not necessarily. Again, making sure you meet the tuition payment
deadlines is your responsibility. If the course and section are still open, and
if registration is still ongoing--i.e., the deadline for adding classes has not
passed--you would be able to re-register in the same section. If that section is
full, you will have to register in another open section. If the course is full,
or if the deadline to add courses has passed, you will not be able to
register--even if you continue to attend, turn in assignments and take exams.
(NOTE: Professors do not have the authority to override registration deadlines.)

4. If a BMGT professor gives me a note, will
I be allowed to add a full section or late register for a course?
A: No. Professors cannot authorize over-subscription or late
registration.

5. How can I register for BMGT Honors
courses?
A: Honors courses are restricted to students in the Honors Program(s).
There are actually two honors programs: The
University Honors Program is designed for freshmen and sophomore students
and the courses are primarily at the freshmen/sophomore level; The Smith
School's Honors Program is designed for juniors and seniors. You must apply and
be accepted into the
BMGT Honors
Program in order to take the upper level BMGT honors courses.
