What’s YOUR “Moment of Obligation”?
When students at the Smith School of Business talk about why they became
interested in social entrepreneurship, they often use the phrase: “I wanted to
do something bigger than myself . . .” For many, this desire grew out of an
epiphany, an intuitive moment when they realized they were not an island of one,
but part of a much bigger planet. We like to call this a “moment of obligation.”
For MBA student Cherry Kwunyeun,
the terrorist attacks of 9/11 became her epiphany: “I was inspired by the
strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity,” says Kwunyeun. “And,
most importantly, when formal structures fail or do not exist to address the
problem, how individual citizens come together and take action.”
Cherry Kwunyeun is a former Fulbright Scholar and current Smith MBA student
who has launched a social business to link companies with microfinanced
producers, designers, and educational institutions to support diversity and
economic development in developing countries.
