Smith Hosts Accounting Teaching Scholars Dinner

On April 20, 2015, the Accounting and Information Assurance Department at the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business hosted its annual Accounting Teaching Scholars  (ATS) dinner.

The ATS program – one of many Fellows programs at Smith – provides an opportunity for a select group of accounting students to serve as teaching assistants in the two Principles of Accounting courses at the business school. These lectures are supplemented by smaller breakout sections, which are taught by the scholars. They also serve as discussion leaders and hold weekly office hours to provide one-on-one help to the more than 2,000 students enrolled in these classes each academic year.

At the annual ATS dinner, Smith faculty and corporate partners honor contributions made by the outgoing Accounting Teaching Scholars and welcome a new group of 15 students who are selected to serve in the upcoming academic year.

“Our Accounting Teaching Scholars help improve the learning environment at the Smith School,” says professor Progyan Basu, faculty champion of the ATS program along with professor Gary Bulmash. “They make significant, positive contributions to improving the learning environment in our Principles courses, and our students consistently commend the support and guidance provided by the ATS. In the process, the ATS also develop critical communication and problem-solving skills, which contribute to their professional development.”

The ATS program, which offers financial compensation to the participants, is supported by generous donations from the corporate partners: Cohn Reznick, Deloitte, Dixon Hughes Goodman, EY, KPMG and PWC.
