Mark Wellman Receives “The Face of Their Field” Award

Mark Wellman, clinical professor and director of the College Park Scholars Business, Society & Economy (BSE) program, was presented with the “The Face of Their Field” Award at the Sixth Annual Faculty/Staff Appreciation ceremony organized by students and staff in the College Park Scholars community held on Friday, April 29, 2016. Wellman, has been the director of the Business, Society and the Economy (BSE) program for the past nine years. It is one of 12 unique programs offered by College Park Scholars, a living-learning, by-invitation only program for freshmen and sophomores. BSE is a campus leader in implementing experiential learning classes and study abroad opportunities.

Wellman was nominated for this award by his students. “The Face of Their Field” Award is a new award category meant “for a person who utilizes their passion through academic and professional resources to enrich the students’ experience in within their prospective field of choice.”

In the words of one student:

“Dr. Wellman is ‘The Face of their Field’ when it comes to the business world. He is dedicated to teaching and has taught me how to make connections between academic theory and real-world practice. I have never come out of one of Dr. Wellman’s classes without learning new information. He demonstrates teaching excellence in all of his classes by introducing students to innovative companies and professionals that provide us opportunities to network and apply our in-class knowledge to real world situations even across the globe,” stated one student.

A student who earned three credits studying in Southeast Asia with Wellman, said: “[he] has clearly guided students to immerse themselves into dynamic learning environments where they develop innovative, global mindsets.”

Wellman has previously received numerous awards for teaching, including the Allen J. Krowe Teaching Excellence Award for his outstanding contribution to business education, the University of Maryland Brit Kirwan award and the Outstanding Faculty Educator Award.

Claudia Donnelly, BSE’s assistant director, was nominated for the “Unsung Hero” award, designed to recognize CPS faculty or staff member who is not always in the limelight, but without whose “contributions, presence and support, their students may not have had the same level of success throughout their Scholars experience.”
