Dr. Hugh Turner has served as a Lecturer at Robert H. Smith School of Business since 1997 and a Tyser Teaching Fellow since 2001. He teaches multiple sections of the Smith School’s prestigious Freshman Fellows as well as core and elective courses in supply chain management and technology to both Smith School undergraduate and MBA students. Dr. Turner is currently serving as Academic Coordinator for the Smith School’s Freshman Fellows Program. In addition, he is developing a Music Management Fellows Program to be launched by the Smith School in Fall 2008. He has been recognized as being among the Smith School’s Top 15% in teaching and was a finalist in the Smith School’s Krowe Award for “teaching with technology.” He serves as Faculty Advisor to the MBA Supply Chain Club and the Music Management Business Society.

Dr. Turner’s industry experience includes working as a private truck fleet manager for a major retailer, a consultant to the railroad industry, and deck officer in the merchant marine where he held a Chief Mate's license. Dr. Turner is a member of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals and Transportation Research Forum.

Dr. Turner's research interests include seaport policy and economics with emphasis on cost structures, port productivity, and infrastructure investment. His work has been published in Maritime Policy & Management and Transportation Research E. In 2003, his dissertation, Infrastructure Productivity in the North American Containerport System: A Longitudinal Study (1984-1997), was awarded first place in the annual dissertation competition sponsored by the Transportation and Public Utilities Group of the American Economic Association. Dr. Turner won first place in the Graduate Student Paper Competition Award sponsored by the Transportation Research Forum in 1999 and became an Eno Foundation Fellow in 2000.
