Aysun is a fourth year student in
the Ph.D. program. She received
her B.S. and M.S. degrees in Industrial
Engineering at Bogazici University,
Turkey, where she also held a teaching
assistantship while a Master’s student.
Even as an undergraduate she was
involved in research and has published
with a prestigious engineering journal.
For her Ph.D. studies, Aysun has
been awarded an assistantship and
a full Dean’s Fellowship. She is
interested in corporate finance
research, mergers and acquisitions,
and credit ratings. Aysun's teaching
experience includes an undergraduate
International Finance course at
the Smith School. |

David Howard joined the Finance
Department in 2006. He earned a
B.A. in Economics and Mathematics
from the University of Virginia,
where he was an Echols Scholar,
in 2004. He worked at the Investment
Company Institute in Washington,
D.C., as a research associate. He
researched and analyzed trends in
the mutual fund industry, particularly
in regards to funds' fees and expenses,
and contributed to several ICI publications.
David was awarded a full graduate
assistantship and a Dean's Summer
Research Fellowship for his Ph.D.
studies at the Robert H. Smith School
of Business, University of Maryland. |

Matthew is in his fourth year of
doctoral studies. Prior to Maryland,
he attained a Masters of Science
in Computational and Quantitative
Finance from the Georgia Institute
of Technology (Atlanta, Ga), where
he was also employed as a teaching
assistant for the department of
mathematics. He attended Washington
and Lee University (Lexington, Va)
for his undergraduate studies, attaining
a Bachelor of Science in business
administration and Bachelor of Arts
in mathematics. |

Nitin joined the Smith School of
Business in 2006 as a PhD student
in Finance. He received his Bachelors
from the Indian Institute of Technology
(IIT) - Kanpur, India and MS in
Quantitative Economics from Indian
Statistical Institute (ISI) - Calcutta,
India. He has worked for Infosys
and SAP during 2002-2004. His current
research interests are corporate
governance and financial econometrics. |

Minwen is a second-year student
in the finance Ph.D. program. She
received her Master of Quantitative
Economics from Tsinghua University
and her B.S. in Finance with an
Outstanding Student Scholarship
from Beijing University in China.
Prior to joining the PhD program,
Minwen was a financial manager at
State Grid Corporation of China,
the largest Chinese power company
ranked 40th among the Fortune Global
500. During her three years working
experience at State Grid, Minwen
was responsible for capital budgeting
and financial reporting of $23 billion
assets and involved in many large
restructuring and financing projects.
She also ranked first in the national
GAAP case competition sponsored
by Treasury Department of China
in 2001. |

Su is a first year Ph.D. student
in the Finance department at the
Robert H. Smith School of Business.
Su was awarded a full graduate assistantship,
along with a Dean's Summer Research
Fellowship. Prior to joining to
the program, he received a B.S.
in physics from the University of
Science and Technology of China
in June, 2001 and a Ph.D. in physics
from the University of Maryland
at College Park in August, 2007.

Yun Liu joined the Finance Department
in 2002. She earned an M.A. degree
in Economics from Simon Fraser University
in Canada, where she was a recipient
of the Graduate Fellowship. Yun
also has experience as a research
assistant in the Ministry of Finance
and the Ministry of Small Business
and Revenue in the British Columbia
government. Her Bachelor degree
was from Guanghua School of Management,
Peking University in China, where
she held the Excellent Academic
Performance Award and various scholarships.
Yun was awarded a full graduate
assistantship and a Dean's Summer
Research Fellowship for her Ph.D.
studies. Her research interests
include corporate governance, compensation,
private equity and international
finance. Yun has taught undergraduate
business finance and international
finance courses in the Smith school.
She received the school’s 2006 Krowe
Teaching Excellence Award and the
department's 2006 Joseph Wikler
Teaching Award. Her entry to the
university's Bright Ideas competition
received Honorable Mention in 2004.

Tanakorn Makaew is a doctoral
candidate in Finance at the
Robert H. Smith School of
Business University of
Maryland-College Park where he
was awarded a full graduate
assistantship and a Dean's
summer research fellowship. He
graduated from Chulalongkorn
University, Bangkok-Thailand,
with a Bachelor's in Computer
Engineering (First Class Honors)
and a Master's in International
Economics and Finance. He also
received another Bachelor's in
Money and Banking from
Ramkhamheang University. His
research interests are in
International Finance, Corporate
Finance and Developmental
Finance. Tanakorn is the winner
of the 2007 Joseph Wikler Award
for Teaching Excellence and a
finalist for the 2007-2008 Allen
Krowe Teaching Award..

Katie Moon joined the Finance Ph.D.
Program in 2006. She attended the
Financial Engineering Program, a
joint program of the School of Mathematics
and the Peter F. Drucker School
of Management at Claremont Graduate
University for her M.S. degree.
Her B.S. in Electrical Engineering
and another M.S. in Computer Science
were from Seoul National University
in Seoul, Korea. She has working
experience as a computer programmer
in a 3D Animation Company. Her current
research interests include Mathematical
Finance and Financial Risk Management. |

Michael
Padhi

Michael Padhi joined the Ph.D. program
in 2003. His research interests
include selection of corporate governance
mechanism, microfinance, private
investment in public equity (PIPEs),
and security design. He is the recipient
of the Business Dean's Fellowship
and is an instructor of banking
and financial institutions. Prior
to joining Smith, Padhi worked as
a financial economic analyst at
the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta
where he performed banking research
and antitrust regulation. His research
on the effect of credit scoring
of small business loans in low-
and moderate- income areas are published
in the Financial Review and were
presented at several conferences.
He has also written several articles
in Federal Reserve publications
on a variety of banking issues. |

Nitish did his undergraduate studies
in Electrical Engineering from Indian
Institute of Management and Post
Graduate Diploma in Management (equivalent
to MBA) from Indian Institute of
Management. He has worked for ITC,
Goldman Sachs, Tata Strategic Management
Group and most recently for Centre
for Advanced Financial Studies (CAFS)
as a researcher where he researched
implied volatility of index options
in Asia and IPO underpricing in
India. |

Tugkan is a third year student in
the Ph.D. program. He received his
M.A. in Economics from the University
of Virginia and B.A in Economics
from Bogazici University with High
Honors. Before joining the Ph.D.
program at UMD, he worked as a Teaching
Assistant at the University of Virginia.
Tugkan was awarded a full graduate
assistantship, along with a Dean's
Summer Research Fellowship, for
his Ph.D. studies. He is interested
in Corporate Governance, M&As, and
Market Microstructure. |

Yue Xiao is a Ph.D. student in the
Finance Program at the Robert H.
Smith School of Business. She specializes
in Mathematical Finance. Yue received
a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics and
Scientific Computation from the
University of Maryland in December
2005. Her research interests include
mathematical finance, asset pricing,
and simulation modeling. |
