Undergraduate
Students
For Parents and
Families
As a parent, there
are many ways that you
can support your student
in his or her quest to
find a fulfilling
post-graduation
position. The job search
process takes an
investment of both time
and effort on your
student's part. It
begins well before
senior year as your
student begins to
explore majors, career
options, internship
opportunities, and
ultimately companies to
work for after
graduation.
This section provides
information that will
allow you to work
successfully with your
student as he or she
decides on a career
focus. We recommend that
you also visit other
sections of the Office
of Career Management web
site to further acquaint
yourself with the
services available to
your student during his
or her time at Smith.
OCM Services for Your
Student
Introduction to the OCM
Several members of
the OCM team are solely
dedicated to the success
of your undergraduate
student. To best serve
the needs of our
students, the office is
separated by function
into the Programming and
Employer Development
teams.
The OCM’s programming
group consists of
Monica Shutte,
David Wilmes and
Jessica Badt. The
programming team manages
the design and
implementation of
cutting-edge
professional development
programming for the
undergraduate business
student population with
the goal of increasing
employer opportunity
awareness, building
outstanding career
management skills, and
providing practical
venues for moving
student skills and
leadership preparedness
to the marketplace. The
team is also responsible
for executing career
advising to
undergraduate business
students on a range of
career issues, including
but not limited to:
resume/cover letter
writing; interviewing
skills; self-assessment;
career exploration; and
internship and job
search techniques.
The OCM’s Employer
Development side of the
house consists of
Lindsay Terry.
Lindsay maintains and
cultivates existing
recruiting relationships
with undergraduate
employers, and
researches and seeks out
new recruiting
relationships with
local, regional,
national and
international companies
with the goal of
encouraging these
organizations to recruit
and hire Smith
undergraduate students.
The team also
communicates and works
with employers and their
representatives to post
available positions,
schedule on-campus
interviews, and make all
logistical arrangements
associated with
on-campus visits.

Assisting Your Student
Parent and Student Roles
To make sure that
your student is on
track, we have developed
a series of lists that
recommend what you
should be doing to
assist your student
throughout his or her
college years. These
lists also define the
role the OCM plays
during each year. Please

Five Tips for Parents of
Career Seeking College
Students
Get
Involved with the OCM
We would love for you
to assist us in our
efforts to assist your
student and his or her
classmates in their
career development and
job search. Please
consider being part of
our team by assisting in
any of the following:
Career Panels and
Workshops:
The OCM periodically
recruits professionals
from different career
fields to speak at
career-related workshops
and panel discussions
for students. For more
information on how you
can be involved in these
events, contact Monica
Shutte at 301-405-2301.
Site Visits:
The OCM can work
with you to arrange for
groups of students to
visit your offices. In
the past, employers have
invited students for
panel presentations,
facility tours, and
receptions. Please
contact Monica Shutte at
301-405-2301 for more
information.
On-Campus
Recruiting and Job
Postings: The OCM is
always looking for ways
to assist companies and
organizations to hire
our graduates. You can
help us with this goal
by recommending that
your employer recruit on
campus if they are not
already doing so. For
more information,
contact Lindsay Terry at
301-405-2301.
