Undergraduate Students

Attending Workshops and Events

Each semester there are a large number of workshops and events for you to take advantage of. Organized by student clubs, the UMD Career Center, The Office of Career Management, and/or other departments, these workshops and events seek to educate students about the job search process, provide essential industry and company information, allow for practice in building interviewing and networking skills, and promote interaction between students, staff, and the external community.

Career Fairs

Smith Career Premiere & Career Fair
Career Premiere is dedicated to those companies looking to develop successful recruiting pipelines with underclassmen for future internship and full-time hiring needs. The Smith Career Fair is focused on companies looking to recruit junior and senior business students.

Club Events

There are a number of recognized student-run undergraduate clubs at Smith. Many associate themselves with specific business industries from accounting to global business. In collaboration with the Office of Career Management, the Office of Undergraduate Studies, and various employers, the clubs at Smith bring a variety of career-related (as well as social) events to our students.

Club events are often very relevant to the focus of the club (e.g., the finance club seeks to educate its members about the various career paths in finance, how to do a finance-tailored resume, and how to get an internship or job in finance). The Office of Career Management will often attend club meetings to talk about resume writing, interviewing skills, or the job/internship search process.

More and more, employers are looking to conduct presentations and interact with student clubs. It is therefore becoming more and more important for students to join clubs for the purposes of networking with fellow peers and employers, and gaining pertinent information on industries and career paths specific to their major.

For student club meeting times and a listing of events, please visit:

Business students can also join UMD student clubs. See the following website for a list: http://www.union.umd.edu/studentorg/general.html.

Company Presentations

Employers will often come to Van Munching to do a presentation on their company. These presentations are generally open to everyone and exist to inform student of opportunities within the company.

Employers giving presentations also use this time to meet students in person. This helps them to decide who they would like to interview. It is very important for students actively seeking an internship or job to attend these presentations.

Fall presentations tend to focus on full-time opportunities and spring presentations tend to focus on internships. However, a student should attend a presentation at any time if they are interested in a company.

All company presentations are listed on a calendar in HireSmith.

Employer of the Day

Employers can be “Employer of the Day” at Smith by coming to Van Munching Hall or Shady Grove Center for a designated period of time (e.g. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.) on a weekday to speak with students on a one-on-one, casual basis. Typically, a company will set up a booth with company materials (as well as some other goodies to give away) and interact with students between classes. This is a great way for you to network with employers on a personal, comfortable level.

See the calendar in HireSmith for a list of Employers of the Day.

Workshops

The UMD Career Center organizes a series of workshops each semester called the “Career Series.” The Office of Career Management encourages Smith students to attend these workshops to meet their individual needs.
