HireSmith is the online job-search website/database customized for students of the Smith School of Business. It facilitates the recruiting, on-campus interviewing, and resume collections of business students/alums. It can be compared to the famous Monster and HotJobs job-search websites and tailored to Smith, with employers and events specifically geared toward the Smith community.

Career & Communications Coaching

Career coaching can support you in all areas of the job search including: understanding where your skills fit; marketing & positioning yourself; jumping industries or types of jobs; developing job market understanding; making and following an action plan; and dealing with job search nerves. They can provide tactical help with resumes, cover letters, elevator speeches, summary of qualifications, interview skills, researching potential employers, and networking.

Career Coaching for First and Second Year Full-time Students

LaVern Chapman, Director & Career Consultant
LaVern Chapman is highly experienced in the creation, execution and management of career programs and employer development initiatives within multicultural environments in private industry, government, and higher education. At Smith, LaVern champions full-time MBA career programming efforts by designing and implementing various career programming initiatives, building strategic partnerships with key internal and external stakeholders, including alumni, employers, and career delivery partners. As the Office of Career Management liaison to the MBAA, functional student clubs, and employers, LaVern designs and communicates OCM policies and tracks and reports full-time MBA job placement statistics in accordance with MBA CSC guidelines.

Sandi Stewart, Career Consultant
Sandi Stewart’s management career has spanned a number of industries. Sandi has experience as a VP of Marketing & Consultant, Associate Product Manager and Marketing Manager at companies to include Johnson & Johnson, Hearst/ABC, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, and Ferrero, N.A. This work experience and MBA from Columbia University has given her a breadth of understanding of diverse opportunities. As an Executive Coach with over 15 years of organizational consulting and coaching experience, Sandi has assisted executives, managers, entrepreneurs and career changers in catalyzing their work and career development.

Kecia Hansard, Career Consultant
Kecia Hansard is an experienced higher education professional with a sincere desire to assist MBA students attain their career goals. Kecia has over 14 years of experience in marketing, recruitment, and student advising within universities and associations. She possesses a wealth of culturally diverse experiences assisting students in the US and abroad, acting as a career resource to Smith student associations, and is skilled in career planning and strategy. A proud TERP, Kecia received her B.S. in Journalism from the University of Maryland, College Park and M.A. in Counseling from The George Washington University with concentrations in multicultural and career counseling. Kecia is currently a doctoral candidate at GWU in Human Resource Development, with research areas in organizational effectiveness, work and identity, and leadership coaching.

Moneca Surida, Program Manager
Having worked most recently as a project manager at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Moneca Surida brings a strong project and logistics management background to both large and small scale clients with varying training needs. As Smith’s MBA career programs manager, Moneca manages the design and implementation of a variety of career programming initiatives. Working with MBA students and clubs, she assists with creation of career programming initiatives and serves as an OCM representative at various student, employer and campus events. Moneca seeks to build strategic partnerships with MBA Admissions and other key internal stakeholders.

CAREER RESOURCE CENTER

Career Resource Center

Use the Career Resource Center for everything you need on company research, personal marketing and professional development. Guidebooks, references, directories and texts are available, as well as computer access to online information.

Location: Room 4568 VMH (next door to the Office of Career Management)

Hours: Spring & Fall semesters: 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Other times: Please contact the OCM at 301-405-2301 for an appointment.

The Center will be closed occasionally for OCM meetings, corporate guests, and campus closures.

Telephone Interviews

Students can reserve an OCM interview room for career-related telephone calls on a first come first served basis. Availability of interview rooms on certain days may be limited due to a high number of employers conducting on-campus interviews. Please plan early and verify availability before finalizing your phone appointment.

To reserve a room, stop by the OCM Reception desk (room 4570), or contact Jessie Young at jyoung@rhsmith.umd.edu or 301-405-2301. Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance. As a courtesy to others using the rooms, please leave the interview room neat and tidy.

Smith OCM MBA Virtual Meeting Room

The Smith OCM MBA Virtual Meeting room provides a chat room, discussion boards, a contact member list, and other resources to inform and prepare Smith MBAs for future career opportunities.

  • Allows near real-time information exchange as it relates to career/job search strategies for students who have completed or are pursuing their MBA at the Smith School of Business.

  • Serves as a forum for leveraging the collective strengths, knowledge, and networks of all Smith MBAs.

  • Allows for sharing of your career search experiences with members of the Smith MBA community.

  • Significantly increases employer-specific institutional knowledge.

Directions for joining/accessing the room:

Point your browser to: http://groups.msn.com/SmithOCMMBA/. You will first need to set up a .NET account, and then apply to the Smith Groups site. If you do not already have either a .NET or Hotmail account, you can obtain one for free and then apply to enter the site. During your application process, if you choose to use a screen name other than your real name, you must provide your real name in the text box to verify your status as a Smith student.

TERP Alumni Network

The TERP Alumni Network is a new and convenient way to stay in touch with fellow alumni and your alma mater. This FREE online community features an Alumni Directory to help you locate old friends and establish a permanent Terp e-mail so that your friends can also find you. There is even a place to update your alumni profile.

Access is exclusive to University of Maryland, College Park, graduates and to members of the alumni association. WetFeet

The WetFeet Network provides information on companies, careers, and industries that job seekers use throughout their careers to make smarter career decisions. WetFeet also offers job seekers expert advice, newsletters, salary benchmarking tools, and discussion boards on everything from negotiating a raise to writing better cover letters.

Additionally, WetFeet publishes the highly-regarded WetFeet Insider Guide series of career management guidebooks for job seekers, which are sold to job seekers worldwide. WetFeet's company and industry profiles and career management content powers the career sections of top properties across the Web, including major newspapers, universities, media companies, staffing firms, job boards and leading employer websites.

Vault

The Office of Career Management provides Smith students access to Vault, an online career research guide. Vault provides insider company information, advice, and career management services. Specific content includes:

  • Updated "insider" information on over 3,000 companies and 70 industries.

  • Over 60 career guides and employer profiles, including well-known titles such as the Vault Guide to the Top 100 Law Firms, Vault Guide to Finance Interviews, and Vault Guide to the Top 50 Consulting Firms. Guides cover a range of industries, including accounting, advertising, fashion, media, investment management, and venture capital.

  • Detailed, targeted and free e-newsletters with breaking news and exclusive stories in various industries.

Hoovers

Hoover's, Inc. delivers comprehensive company, industry, and market intelligence that drives business growth. The Hoovers database includes 12 million companies, with in-depth coverage of 30,000 of the world's top business enterprises. Hoover's editorial staff of some 80 editors and researchers bring vital business information and knowledge, updating the site daily to bring visitors and subscribers the most up-to-date business information in the industry.

To access Hoover's from off-campus (If you are on-campus, click on the link in #2):

1. Go to VBIC (http://vbic.umd.edu) and select "Off Campus Access" on the left menu for instructions.

2. Once in, click on "VBIC Databases" on the left menu, go to the letter 'H' for 'Hoovers and you will be able to access the database --- http://premium.hoovers.com/subscribe/

H1Base provides information on companies that may sponsor international students. To access H1Base, please click here.  Enter your Email and Password in the "Current User Login" box at the top of the page and click the "Login" button.  Click on the "VIEW" button next to the "All Directories - Unlimited users" service heading.

VBIC

The Virtual Business Information Center (VBIC) is a compilation of electronic and print business resources intended to provide research assistance to the Smith community.
